About the track

The Circuit of the Americas (COTA) debuted just last year in 2012 and it became an instant success with amazing response from the crowd, teams and drivers. This is the second year of the race on this circuit which is the first permanent circuit to be built in the United States for F1. This 5.516 km track is one of the most challenging tracks as we can see there are some dangerous curves at some places and efforts have been made to make it world-class incorporating key features of the tracks across the world.

About the race

This is the penultimate race of the season but the championship has already been won by Sebastian Vettel with seven races won in a row including the last race at Abu Dhabi. The four time world champion is on the way to make his mark and if manages to win this race, he would be the first one to win eight races in a row in one season. Currently Alberto Ascari holds the record for the most consecutive wins which is nine but that is spread across two seasons.

In terms of ranking as well, he clearly leads the Drivers’ Championship stands with 347 points under his belt and a massive lead of 130 points over next placed Fernando Alonso. Kimi Räikkönen remains in third position with 183 points but recently he has confirmed that he will not be participating in the race due to back injury and so would be replaced by Heikki Kovalainen for the remaining two races.

Lewis Hamilton is at fourth position currently but this race would be one of the most important races for him of this season after a not-so-good season till now. He has 175 points which is just 8 point away from Kimi and since Kimi is not participating, he may take his chances to come to gain the third spot. He has won all races held in US, first in 2007 at Indianapolis and the last race in 2012 which means has win record of 100 percent and he would like to maintain the record.

Talking about Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, he did not have a good last race after a high-speed run over the kerbing in Abu Dhabi left him with an injury at the back and there were news that he may not be able to participate in the remaining races of the season. But the good news is that he will be back for this race and probably the next one also.

Talking about the Constructors’ standings, Red Bull continues to lead with 513 points thanks to the performances of its ace driver Vettel. Mercedes AMG is at second position with 334 points which is a massive gap of 179 points and now with two races left for this season there is no chance that it will get to the top. But there is a tough fight as Ferrari is just 11 points behind Mercedes with 323 points and at third position.

Our predictions

There is no doubt that this is one of the finest race tracks and this being the second year there is already excitement building up for the upcoming race. We can expect records to happen as Sebastian Vettel looks the strongest contender to win this race as well and all the more when he has not won a single race here. But let’s not forget Lewis Hamilton as his pride and performance would be at stake in this race and he would like to continue with his 100 percent win record in US.

Overall it may be the penultimate race of this season with almost everything decided for this calendar race year but still there is some great exciting stuff that we can expect in this as well as the last race that would be held next week in Brazil on November 24.
